Consulting vs Outsourcing
Have just been ploughing my way through the latest report from the Management Consultancies Association and it's a pretty remarkable read. Take a look at this chart:
No matter how much has been written about outsourcing in the last years, it's hard to take on board just how much this business line has transformed the face of consulting and the companies that make up the consulting world. These latest figures show that outsourcing has now outgrown all your traditional consulting business lines taken in combination! (as a former strategy consultant, I intentionally sideline IT consulting from this comparison, call it a force of habit)

In very general terms I find the outsourcing mentality very template driven...Shocked to find so many clients/companies who feel they are somewhow out of step if they are not outsourcing.....Beats me!!
On a company, industry & national level outsourcing may have short term financial advantage but to my mind the resulting vulnerability to even minor world events as well as a weakened regional/local infrastructure are not even considered....."We will always come up with something new" seems to be the standard answer?

Ive personally worked for 3 in outsourcing operations and went B-school for an MBA degree. I am now in a mgt consulting role, which I personally find much more satisfying and enriching. Consulting requires a far higher degree of problem solving skills and offers much more variety. Consulting client interactions are also much more sophiticated and at a higher level than those in an outsourcing setup.
This is my personal opinion having worked in both setups - no offense meant to members of the outsourcing fraternity on this blog.

From the suppliers' side, it is necessary for the them to move up the value chain, create a USP, enhance the value proposition, and may be build a worldclass best practice, representing value and cost. Should this happen, the outsourcing will be irreversible

Outsourcing as a concept is definitely not 'template driven'. The companies are indeed exploring opportunities 'out there', not just to reduce costs but to direct all energies to focus on core functions. Large corporate like GE has been immensely benefited by way of significant savings, which in turn helps them to invest more on their core activities. This is surely not a short term strategy of GE.
While we try to have a unique strategy for our businesses, is it not a part of strategy to imbibe something from most successful stories?
